Darry
In The Outsiders Darrel also known as Darry, has to take care of his younger brother Ponyboy because their parents passed away in a car crash. Darry is 20 years old. Ponyboy and Darry have another brother, Sodapop; they all belong to the gang called “Greasers”. Many things go bad with their lives but the only thing keeping them together is family love.
Darry works two jobs to support Ponyboy and Sodapop. He is more of the “father figure” since their real parents died. He has to make sure that Ponyboy stays out of trouble because if he gets in any more trouble than he had before, he would get taken away by the state and put into foster care. All three of them don’t want that. He tries the best he can to keep everything together. He promised that he wouldn’t hit Ponyboy and one day, he loses it and hits him. Ponyboy runs to Johnny’s and asks him if they can go to the vacant lot, then the park. There are the Greasers and the Socs, short for socials. They are pretty much separated by white collar and blue collar. The Greasers are blue collar, poorer and have to actually work and have lower paying jobs. So, the Socs are white collar which is people who don’t do labor work. They think they are better than the Greasers. When Johnny Ponyboy are at the park some Socs came up to them and wouldn’t leave them alone. They started bothering them, then they wouldn’t leave Ponyboy alone and Johnny got beat up and at the same time were dunking Ponyboy’s head in the fountain. Johnny wakes up and see’s what is going on, he is already mad; he pulls out his switch blade, and ends up killing a Soc, Bob. The boys get scared and run to Dallas “Dally” who sends them to an abandon church. They stay there until it clears up. Then Darry gets put in jail because of this whole thing.
The reader actually feels bad for Darry because he is has this weight on his shoulders; he has to take care of his gang and now his little brothers or kid brothers as they say. He is still young and what 20 year old thinks of taking care of their brothers all by himself? I don’t know what I’d do if I was him. To me family is the most important but, I would be very stressed if I was him. In the book Ponyboy wonders why Darry is so mean and harsh on him. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t want him to screw up his life. Also, maybe the way he thinks is that the tougher you are with kids the smarter they will be when they become old enough to make decisions and important decisions on his own. There are many possibilities of what it could be. The rest of them look up to Darry. I have people like my cadets who look up to me. I don’t think as a life role model, but as a person to be a leader. To them I am a leader. I am happy that they look up to me and respect me. In The Outsiders they look up to Darry and respect him. They know if they don’t they will be in trouble. I have respect for anyone who deserves it, and show they do. Also adults, usually I answer to them as Ma’am or Sir. I think that now days the teenagers and kids are getting more and more disrespectful. It makes me angry and sad that they lost or don’t show respect for adults. I know I do.
If I was in Darry’s situation I don’t know what I’d do. I know I would be very stressed out and struggle. I have great respect for him, even though he is a made up character. If he was real, I would have so much respect for him. The reality is that does occur. When both of the parents die and they have a child that is over 18 and younger children, that’s usually what happens. The children go to the one that is over 18. It’s sad, actually. Those people I have respect for and always will.
