“Does Patriotism Still Matter?”
Patriotism is love and devotion to your country. When you show patriotism, you support one country. It doesn’t mean just to the military, even though that is a part of it. Just think how it would be if no one was patriotic. What would our country be like? We stand in our classrooms everyday and say the Pledge of Allegiance to show that we have patriotism. If you are in any branch of the military you have to show patriotism. Also why would you not want to show patriotism? You’re supporting your home country. People, such as, Dwight D. “Ike” Eisenhower, became great leaders. Eisenhower was a five-star general in the United States Army before he was elected the thirty-fourth President of the United States of America. In all his military positions, Eisenhower showed great talents for leadership and diplomacy.
The people, who earn the Medal of Honor like Cpl. Jason L. Dunham age 22, earned the Medal of Honor in Iraq when he put his life in God’s hands on April 14, 2004. Dunham was manning a check point in Karabilah, Iraq, when an insurgent got out of his car while Dunham was checking his van, and began to choke him. Two other Marines saw and ran over to help Dunham. The last words that anyone heard were, “No. No. watch his hands.” One Marine spotted an assault rifle underneath one of the seats of the van. He gave out a signal and the guy that was choking Dunham pulled out a hand grenade and threw it. Jason tried to save his men by throwing himself on top of the grenade. Three men were wounded. Eight days later Cpl. Jason L. Dunham died at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Jason Dunham made the ultimate sacrifice and saved the lives of his fellow Marines. Therefore he earned the Medal of Honor.
Together, we can all be patriotic.
We can help each other by being the best patriot that we can be. Even if it as simple as is standing up in our school saying the Pledge of Allegiance or thanking someone who has or is currently serving our country; patriotism is very important, I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to be patriotic. For me it’s a part of my everyday life. Especially when I have brother’s currently overseas serving our country being the best they can be.
