“The Lie” by Kurt Vonnegut
Just think how you would feel if your parents put a lot of pressure on you and your father tried to even bribe the school board to get you into a school, but when you took the entrance test you failed and didn’t get in. How would you explain that to your parents? 13 years old Eli is pressured mostly by his father because, the school, Whitehall, even has a building named after his grandfather. His family has been going to that school for generations.
When Eli found out that he did not get into the school, he did what most kids shouldn’t do. Eli didn’t show the letter to his parents. His parents trusted him to go and get the mail, and be truthful and not hide anything. He probably didn’t tell his parents because, was just scared of what his father would do or say or do. Maybe, he thought that his father would dis-own him.
Eli should be blamed for the lie, because he did lie to his parents. When you lie, you are just getting yourself in more trouble. The bigger the lie, the more trouble you will be in. It is always better when you tell the truth. The mode for this is comedy, because it fits the plot line. It starts with everyday life, a mild arises, then when his parents find out the conflict fully arises, after that the resolution occurs, then they go back to their everyday life.
When his parents finally find out Dr. Remenzel tries to bribe the school board with saying; you have to let him in because, he is a Remenzel. There is even a building named after us. His father thinks that just because he has that last name that he can do anything. Sure, if you really want to you can to anything you want. If you think though, did Eli really want to go to the school for him or for his father and to keep the name going?
This is a story that teaches you something. It has an important lesson to it. No matter what you did, or what happened, you should always tell the truth, if you don’t it will always come back to you. So, it is always a good idea, no matter what the problem is it’s a good idea to tell the truth.
